The Layoff at ESPN
In June 2023, ESPN underwent a significant talent layoff involving several notable figures, including Suzy Kolber, Steve Young, Max Kellerman, and Jalen Rose. At the time of the layoff, Kolber was hosting ESPN’s ‘Monday Night Countdown’ pregame show.
Kolber on Her Departure
Recently, Kolber discussed her termination in a conversation on the ‘Sports Media with Richard Deitsch’ podcast. She recalled a conversation with ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro, who informed her of the uncertain status of her job. Kolber said, “He [ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro] said, ‘Suzy there’s a whiteboard and your name’s on it. I don’t really know for sure right now but your name is on it.'”
Personal Impact
Reflecting on the event, Kolber shared a poignant moment she had with her daughter as she grappled with the news. “I remember that day sitting next to my daughter in the kitchen. For years I’ve said ‘You never know.’ And I sat down next to her and I cried. And I said, ‘I think this is really happening.'” Kolber described this as a challenging period, with emotions running high.
The Aftermath and Reaction
Following the layoff, Kolber received communication from ESPN executive Norby Williamson. He informed her of a non-disparagement clause in her contract, prohibiting her from speaking negatively about the company. She admitted to feeling overwhelmed upon receiving this instruction. Before her departure, Kolber had accepted a 39% salary cut, hoping it would stabilize her job.
Kolber expressed a sense of entitlement and disappointment, as her 27-year tenure at ESPN was seemingly unacknowledged. She said, “I just thought after 27 years of, I was the first person hired for the launch of ESPN 2. I was the first person assigned to the X Games.” Kolber was known for contributing significantly to ESPN’s programming.
Transitioning Roles at ESPN
ESPN replaced Kolber with Scott Van Pelt for ‘Monday Night Countdown,’ aligning with their plans to broadcast the Super Bowl. Van Pelt, a long-standing favorite, was seen as an ideal choice for the role. ESPN’s roster includes multiple NFL hosts, complicating Kolber’s situation and contributing to her layoff.
Looking Forward
Despite the layoff, Kolber’s talent was not questioned. She has now launched a new interview series titled ‘The Originals,’ which premieres on the Scripps Sports Network.
As ESPN moves forward, changes in personnel highlight the evolving dynamics in sports media.
