College football is undeniably enjoyable, but many teams seem apprehensive at the season’s start. Often, games between lesser-known schools and powerhouse teams generate excitement and revenue for smaller programs. However, these one-sided matches, where a powerhouse team secures a victory by 40 points, can be dull for spectators.
Early ranked matchups add thrill to the season. With expanded playoffs, teams should be required to face tougher opponents from the outset. This change will give regular season games substantial significance. An undefeated record under challenging circumstances garners more respect.
If Notre Dame records an unbeaten season, attention will likely focus on a couple of games. In contrast, when teams like Ohio State and Texas clash early and throughout the season, an undefeated campaign is far more impressive. These matchups build anticipation and highlight team performances in meaningful ways.
Ohio State and Texas Clash
The Ohio State Buckeyes are set to face the Texas Longhorns at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on August 30, 2025. Ohio State, currently holding the top rank nationally, exhibited dominance in their season opener with a 56-3 victory over Ball State. Julian Sayin’s remarkable efficiency in offense, demonstrated by his 320-yard performance, was notable.
Despite Ohio State’s strong showing, their upcoming game against Texas’s formidable defense presents a real challenge. Last year, when these teams last met, Ohio State managed only 14 points against the Longhorns. Sayin’s passing yardage in that game was the lowest all season.
Texas Longhorns: High Hopes and Expectations
Texas enters the game as the nation’s fourth-ranked team, facing early-season tests similar to the previous year. During their 2025 season opener, the Longhorns struggled against Ohio State, losing with only seven points scored. Arch Manning had a challenging time at quarterback in that matchup.
This season, Texas showed improvement with a straightforward win over Texas State. Manning exhibited better form, throwing for 305 yards and achieving four touchdowns. The Longhorns scored significantly, although Manning did encounter an interception.
Texas must prove themselves against top teams to be taken seriously. The Longhorns, facing one of the toughest schedules, opened favored to win against Ohio State. After losing key defensive players, Ohio State might be vulnerable, presenting Texas an opportunity for victory and revenge on home turf.
