Ryan Reynolds and Dr. Drew Debate the Legacy of the 1980s

Ryan Reynolds has voiced a critical view of the 1980s, countered by Dr. Drew Pinsky. The ‘Deadpool’ actor believes the decade wasn’t as idyllic as many think, reflecting more turmoil than nostalgia might suggest.

In an interview with Variety, Reynolds remarked that time has glossed over the troubles of the era. He stated, “There’s always a rosy feeling as we distance ourselves from a specific period. It’s like we overshadow all the trauma with happier thoughts.” Reynolds described the 1980s as “a brutal, brutal time,” pointing out significant strife and socio-political tensions during that period.

“The ’80s was a f—ing mess… and people forget that. It was a tremendous strife. Sociopolitical tensions everywhere,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds referenced the shadow of the Cold War and the lasting impact of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He suggested that people have romanticized that turbulent time as simply “Top Gun” and cocaine: “No! It was really scary.” His comments came while promoting his new Apple TV film, “Mayday,” set in 1987.

This sparked a debate when Dr. Drew challenged Reynolds’ perspective on the “Actual Friends” podcast. Having met Reynolds, Dr. Drew expressed admiration for the actor but disagreed with his assessment.

“I am a Ryan Reynolds fan… but he is very wrong here,” Dr. Drew stated.

Dr. Drew argued that Reynolds may confuse the tumultuous 1970s with the 1980s. He reflected on the latter as a time of optimism, mentioning the initial disdain for Reagan that faded as the decade progressed.

“The ’80s was this huge relief that came,” Dr. Drew said. “It was just one celebration after another.”

Dr. Drew questioned the absence of “fun” nowadays, observing that the 1980s were “flat-out fun,” suggesting a contrast with the current lack of enjoyment.
