Chargers Struggle with New Offensive Scheme Against Cardinals
The Chargers unveiled their new offensive scheme on Sunday but struggled, losing 26-14 to the Arizona Cardinals. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh experienced his first Week 1 loss in the NFL.
Offensive Challenges
Arizona dominated on several fronts. They blocked a punt in the fourth quarter and scored shortly after. Harbaugh acknowledged the team’s performance was “sloppy” and emphasized the need for improvement.
“Overall, offensively, was just a dog… performance,” said tight end Charlie Kolar.
The Cardinals managed the game efficiently, dominating the possession time by over 15 minutes compared to the Chargers.
Defensive Issues
Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. commented on the need for better defensive execution, noting the defense must improve at achieving three-and-outs to provide the offense more opportunities.
Mixed Results for New Coordinator
New offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel hoped to protect quarterback Justin Herbert by facilitating quicker throws. Herbert faced fewer hits but struggled to find open receivers, completing 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He got sacked three times.
The first of these sacks was crucial, occurring during a fourth-and-goal attempt, resulting in a significant loss and setting up Arizona’s field-goal completion.
Injury Concerns
The Chargers faced injury setbacks with receiver Ladd McConkey suffering a chest injury and KeAndre Lambert-Smith dealing with a hamstring issue, limiting receiving options.
Expectations vs. Reality
In anticipation of regular-season matchups with their preseason opponents, the Chargers maintained a cautious approach during the summer but failed to capitalize on this knowledge. Herbert expressed disappointment in the team’s execution despite knowing the plays.
The spotlight shifted to the Chargers after the Rams’ loss and Myles Garrett’s injury proclaimed attention. However, the Chargers couldn’t capitalize as favored, losing to the underdog Cardinals.
Cardinals’ Success
Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett displayed skill and consistency against the Chargers’ defense coordinated by Chris O’Leary. Rookie Jeremiyah Love scored a significant touchdown, and tight end Trey McBride exploited coverage gaps, achieving nine catches for 95 yards.
Brissett succeeded in managing the game, completing 27 of 37 passes for 277 yards, with a touchdown. Brissett’s three consecutive kneeldowns closed the game for the Cardinals, who scored more points in this match than in most games last season.
Omarion Hampton scored early with a nine-yard touchdown run but finished with only 43 yards on 12 carries.
Kicker Chad Ryland contributed with four field goals, narrowly missing a fifth with a 54-yard attempt off the upright.
Harbaugh now faces the challenge of rallying his team after the initial setback. “We understand we need to bounce back,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of resilience.
