A memo written by Joe Biden during his vice presidency has resurfaced amidst Donald Trump’s decision to skip his son’s wedding. Trump, via Truth Social, expressed regret over missing Don Jr. and Bettina Anderson’s wedding due to government commitments, highlighting a distinct contrast with Biden’s past emphasis on family.
Biden’s Family Memo
In 2014, Biden issued a memo to his staff expressing his expectations on work-family balance. Addressed to his ‘wonderful staff’, the memo clarified, I do not expect nor do I want any of you to miss or sacrifice important family obligations for work.
He detailed various family events like birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, religious ceremonies, and times of need, stressing their importance to him.
Biden believed missing these events would disappoint him, an unwritten rule since his Senate days. The memo underscored his commitment to family values and concluded with gratitude for his staff’s efforts.
Trump’s Response to Wedding Clash
Trump’s choice to miss Don Jr.’s wedding stemmed from government affairs and his love for the country, as he communicated in his post. He felt compelled to remain in Washington during critical times, mentioning tensions with Iran as a significant factor.
Speaking at the White House, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of balancing presidential duties with family events, articulating his predicament over media scrutiny.
Biden’s Family Focus
Biden often discussed his focus on family, shaped by past personal tragedies, like the loss of his first wife and daughter. He shared how his mother encouraged him to find positives in adversity, strengthening his bond with surviving sons.
Biden commuted daily from Delaware to Washington, prioritizing family interaction. His commitment continued after marrying his second wife, Jill, with whom he had another daughter, Ashley.
Trump’s Family Involvement
Trump integrates family into his professional life, with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner having served as senior advisers, while Don Jr. and Eric are involved in his business ventures. Despite working extensively, Trump maintains connections with his children.
Melania Trump described Trump’s relationship with their son Barron as loving, enjoying quality family time despite his busy schedule. While she mentioned Trump didn’t engage in some parenting duties, the familial bond remained strong.
Newsweek has reached out to the Bidens and White House for further comments.
