Macklemore, known for his hit “Thrift Shop,” faced backlash during Ed Sheeran’s U.S. stadium tour. His politically charged performances led to multiple venues refusing to host him. The rapper, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, was removed from the tour after pro-Palestinian speeches and performances at MetLife Stadium.
During the MetLife shows, Macklemore wore a keffiyeh and showed footage of Gaza’s destruction. He performed “Hind’s Hall” and led “Free Palestine” chants. The song’s lyrics accuse Israel of genocide, which stirred controversy.
Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, cited Macklemore’s stage behavior and “anti-Semitic rhetoric” as reasons for barring him from performing. Gillette Stadium emphasized its commitment to providing a welcoming environment without hate speech. Kraft released a statement explaining that Macklemore’s actions were offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.
Tour promoter Messina Touring Group confirmed Macklemore’s removal after several venues rejected him. Macklemore’s controversial past includes a 2014 Seattle performance where he wore an outfit deemed anti-Jewish by civil rights groups. He claimed it was a coincidence at the time.
Kraft mentioned Macklemore’s selective presentation of the conflict, urging balance in advocacy. Supporting Palestinians while condemning Hamas and antisemitism should coexist. Kraft expressed willingness to discuss facts with Macklemore in pursuit of peace and ending suffering.
Macklemore reacted on social media, blaming venue operators and Kraft for his removal while acknowledging Sheeran’s tough position. He denied Kraft’s labeling of his comments as hate speech and accepted losing his tour spot for his cause.
