The Denver Broncos’ aspiration to lead the AFC West took a blow during the first Monday Night Football game of the 2026 NFL season. Kansas City Chiefs outpaced the Broncos with a decisive 31-10 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.
Patrick Mahomes returned to play after nine months since his ACL and LCL injuries last December. His comeback was a focal point of the game. Yet, it was Kenneth Walker, Kansas City’s running back and Super Bowl LX MVP, who shone brightly, surpassing Denver’s entire offensive effort with 191 total yards, including 173 rushing and 18 receiving, and scoring two touchdowns.
Denver faced early challenges when Chiefs cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted a pass from Bo Nix during the Broncos’ first drive. Mahomes quickly capitalized with a 15-yard touchdown scramble, boosting Kansas City’s momentum. Kansas City sustained this energy, with Walker delivering a remarkable 60-yard touchdown run in the second half, aiding the Chiefs as they maintained a strong lead.
Denver’s offense struggled throughout the game. Under new offensive coordinator Davis Webb, the Broncos failed to compete with the yardage achieved by Kansas City’s lead tailback. Despite a brief equalizing touchdown from Nix to Evan Engram in the first quarter, the Broncos stumbled into four consecutive punts before halftime.
Denver’s situation worsened in the third quarter. Although safety Brandon Jones intercepted a Mahomes pass providing Denver a first-and-goal opportunity, the Broncos failed to convert it into a game-tying touchdown. Bo Nix’s errors added to Denver’s troubles with a fumbled snap forcing a field goal and another fumble leading to a Walker touchdown catch from Mahomes, solidifying Kansas City’s advantage.
The night featured a significant milestone by Travis Kelce. The All-Pro tight end recorded a 59-yard reception that moved him past Jason Witten for second in the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list for tight ends, now trailing Tony Gonzalez.
Despite the setbacks, Kansas City’s dominance in the AFC West continues, leaving Denver’s ambitions unfulfilled. As the season progresses, the Chiefs remain a formidable force, while Denver seeks improvement.
