The New York Giants faced a major question before their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys: would star receiver Malik Nabers take the field? Despite being cleared to play weeks in advance, Nabers struggled with confidence following a severe knee injury last year.
Nabers suffered a knee injury involving the ACL and meniscus, which presented both physical and mental recovery challenges. His readiness to face contact was uncertain, bringing concern to the team.
New Giants coach John Harbaugh, known for his unique approach, played a pivotal role. Harbaugh has a record of winning 13 season openers since his head coaching debut in 2008. He knows when a player needs a motivational push.
During a team walkthrough, Harbaugh tackled Nabers to address his apprehension about getting hit. This surprising move aimed to show Nabers he could handle the impact.
“I know everybody was worried about if I get tackled,” Nabers said. “Actually, coach Harbaugh tackled me… He wanted to see if I could take a tackle and it was good.”
Such action reflects Harbaugh’s old-school approach, driven by instinct over analytics. Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart recounted how the unexpected tackle during practice created a breakthrough moment.
“It was right before our walkthrough,” Dart shared. “Coach Harbs and I talked. He thought once Malik gets hit, he’d feel confident. Suddenly, Harbs tackled Leek, and it showed he was fine.”
Despite this step, Harbaugh remained uncertain about Nabers’ readiness until a few hours before the game. Nabers made the final call, testing himself before deciding to play.
Head coach Harbaugh, satisfied with Nabers’ performance, noted the receiver’s capability. “He had to feel ready,” Harbaugh explained. “He needed to protect himself and perform as he wanted. He did just that against the Cowboys.”
Nabers recorded six catches for 69 yards, modest stats but crucial for the Giants. His return restores confidence in his ability to handle contact.
“It was amazing to be back,” Nabers expressed. “I’m thrilled the fans still support me.
