Costco has implemented purchase limits on its Kirkland Signature motor oil due to rising gas and diesel prices. Customers can now buy a maximum of two boxes per week. This change responds to recent price increases in motor oil and aims to prevent stock issues.
The 5-quart, two-bottle case of engine oil, which supports engine efficiency by reducing wear and managing heat, now costs $57.99, up from the mid-$30s range maintained for years. The purchase cap of two units per week applies to each membership, creating uncertainties about how long this limitation will last.
In addition to its house brand, Costco is also capping purchases of Mobil 1 motor oil, pricing a six-quart case at $44 with a limit of five per customer. The Auto Wire suggests that these limitations might be due to potential supply constraints or anticipated price increases.
The higher prices for motor oil relate to the spike in oil prices following recent geopolitical events. With oil companies focusing on converting crude oil into more profitable products like petrol and diesel, motor oil production has become less attractive. This affects both supply and cost, making motor oil more expensive for consumers.
Though Costco is currently the only retailer imposing these limits, drivers are left seeking cost-effective options for oil changes. As of now, other major retailers like Walmart, AutoZone, and Amazon have not introduced similar purchase limits. Walmart’s equivalent synthetic oil is available for about $32 per 5-quart jug, while AutoZone and Amazon offer a pack of two Mobil 1 bottles for competitive prices.
Rising costs affect both DIY consumers and retailers trying to manage inventory. Costco, known for its budget-friendly Kirkland motor oil, seeks to mitigate stockpiling and resale through these current restrictions.
