Kathy Garver recently expressed her views on the unsuccessful 2002 reboot of ‘Family Affair.’ In an interview, Garver, who plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the original series with a marathon on Catchy Comedy, shared why the new version fell short of its beloved predecessor.
‘Excuse my language, but it sucked,’ Garver candidly stated. Garver, known for her role as Cissy in the original series, identified a lack of chemistry and warmth as key issues with the remake.
‘When they see Gary Cole, they say, ‘Well, that’s not Uncle Bill,’ Garver observed, noting that viewers struggled to connect with the new actors’ portrayals. ‘Cole was great in other roles, but he’s no Brian Keith.’
The original series aired in 1966, featuring Brian Keith as Bill Davis, who takes in his late brother’s three children. Sebastian Cabot played Mr. French, the family butler. Garver praised both remake actors Gary Cole and Tim Curry. However, she believed their interpretations differed too much from the original leads.
Garver emphasized Keith’s unique blend of toughness and loving nature, which resonated with audiences. Comparatively, she felt Tim Curry’s portrayal of Mr. French deviated from Cabot’s understated approach.
‘Tim Curry had a whole different take on it,’ Garver noted. ‘It was more like the Tim Curry show, which wasn’t in line with the original sitcom’s approach.’
In the reboot, Garver found the familial love and bond missing, vital elements that Cabot’s Mr. French embodied in the original. She reasoned that these connections made the initial series special.
The 1966 show was groundbreaking for its time, featuring a single relative raising orphaned kids. Garver pointed out that the original’s production quality also contributed to its success. Filmed in color, the show involved veterans from the film industry, lending it a unique polish.
Garver highlighted the timeless appeal of the original ‘Family Affair,’ attributing it to relatable storylines that continue to engage audiences. ‘It has stories that endure today. It remains relatable because it’s a family series dealing with everyday issues.’
Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Garver believes the cast’s genuine chemistry further enhanced its appeal. ‘People really liked each other — what a concept,’ she said, contrasting it with chaotic modern offerings.
‘Family Affair,’ according to Garver, provides emotional comfort similar to enjoying a comforting treat. The original series, with its enduring warmth and classic charm, continues to resonate with viewers today.
In celebration, the Catchy Comedy Network will broadcast a marathon featuring eight of Garver’s favorite episodes on September 13. Garver will host, offering insights into her experience playing Cissy across five memorable seasons.
