Authorities reported that a gunshot during a fight after a tailgate near Notre Dame’s South Bend, Indiana, campus injured a woman and a police officer on Saturday night. The disturbance began at 7:30 p.m. ET as people left the university’s tailgating areas for Eddy Street Commons.
South Bend authorities, informed by Notre Dame Police, stated a male suspect had been seen with a firearm, pointing it at individuals. However, when South Bend Police identified someone fitting the description, that individual was unarmed.
According to South Bend Police, approximately 20 officers were present in Eddy Street Commons when a gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Officers found a woman with a leg wound, not life-threatening, and a police officer with an injury caused by a ricochet or shrapnel.
The incident led to the closure of Eddy Street Commons near the Notre Dame campus for investigation. Both the woman and the officer were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover fully. The officer is reported to be doing fine, and the woman is okay.
Notre Dame officials noted the suspect fled west from the scene. Local reports describe the suspect as a heavyset Black male with dreadlocks, wearing blue shorts, a black shirt with a red and blue design, and missing one shoe. Efforts to locate the suspect continue.
Following this event, police evacuated local businesses and parking garages. The South Bend Police Department secured the area, advising the public to stay away while the investigation continued. Fox News Digital reached out for comments but received no additional information beyond the department’s Facebook posts.
Lately, another shooting a mile away resulted in at least two deaths and one critical injury. Police have not connected the two incidents. Eric Mack, a breaking news reporter, covers stories including politics, elections, and foreign affairs from Sunday to Thursday, 6 a.m. ET to 2 p.m. ET.
