Kim Kardashian recently discussed a health diagnosis that holds personal significance. In a trailer for “The Kardashians,” the 45-year-old revealed that she has esophagitis, a condition involving inflammation of the esophagus. This news carries weight as her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59.
During an episode, the Skims founder is observed on a hospital bed. An off-camera voice inquires, “Didn’t your father … isn’t it what he died of?” In response, Kardashian’s manager and mother, Kris Jenner, expressed her emotional reaction, saying, “I can’t. It makes me want to cry.” Despite these concerns, experts emphasize that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are distinct conditions.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) states that esophagitis is most commonly triggered by acid reflux, certain medications, infections, or allergies. In contrast, esophageal cancer involves malignant cells developing in the esophageal lining, with squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma being the primary types, according to the National Cancer Institute.
While esophagitis itself does not directly cause cancer, persistent inflammation might lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition increasing the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma, notably in individuals with ongoing acid reflux (GERD). The NIDDK notes that 5% to 15% of GERD patients develop Barrett’s esophagus, although most do not progress to esophageal cancer.
To manage symptoms of esophagitis and reduce future cancer risks, the Mayo Clinic recommends:
- Take prescribed acid-reducing medications if GERD is the cause, to heal the esophagus.
- Avoid foods and beverages that may exacerbate reflux, such as alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and mint.
- Wait at least three hours after eating before lying down, and elevate yourself if nighttime reflux occurs.
- Lose excess weight and quit smoking if applicable to diminish reflux and aid healing.
- Consult a gastroenterologist if symptoms persist or if complications arise.
Kardashian also revealed another health concern in 2025, stating her doctors discovered a small, unruptured brain aneurysm during an MRI scan. She shared, “They’re like, ‘It’s been there for, like, years. It was here a few years ago,’” in an episode of “The Kardashians.”
