California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a statewide emergency, anticipating severe impacts from El Niño-fueled storms this winter. The action responds to concerns about coastal flooding and intense waves.
El Niño is expected to bring significant surf and damaging storms, necessitating proactive strategies to safeguard Californians, critical infrastructure, agriculture, natural resources, and the state’s economy. This initiative will enhance readiness and support for affected regions.
Gov. Newsom stated, “California is strongest when we look out for one another. This action aims to provide communities with necessary support and offer first responders the tools to perform effectively.”
Multiple counties have already declared local emergencies due to recent tropical storms. These have heightened concerns over coastal damage from El Niño, as homes from south Orange County to Malibu face flooding and damage. Erosion has been severe from Carlsbad to Long Beach.
Responding to damage, places like Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Carlsbad declared local emergencies, citing coastal erosion and sand loss. Tropical disturbances, such as Hurricane Marie, have escalated these effects, and Orange County activated its emergency operations center.
In San Diego County, the city of Carlsbad declared an emergency, aiming to save Carlsbad Boulevard from erosion. A coastally trapped Kelvin wave influenced by El Niño is also moving up from Mexico.
Forecasts predict a higher likelihood of damaging storms this winter, with government data indicating a 75% chance the current El Niño will be the strongest since 1950. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center reports a 98% probability of a very strong El Niño period lasting until December.
