New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defended his meetings with President Donald Trump, addressing questions about whether he was softening criticism to avoid Trump’s discontent. Mamdani stated, “If a meeting could be the difference between detention and dignity, it’s a meeting worth taking.” The meeting occurred on Monday before the U.N. General Assembly at Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. This marked the first meeting between a sitting president and New York City mayor since 1981.
After Trump left, Mamdani expressed that he had been candid with Trump about disagreements, especially concerning immigration. Mamdani argued that prior discussions had helped release individuals his administration supported: “I will continue to have conversations with the president and frankly with anyone who can deliver relief to the people of this city.” This likely referred to a February White House meeting through which Columbia University student Elmina “Ellie” Aghayeva was released from detention.
Earlier this month, Mamdani announced legal action against the Trump administration over a new federal rule affecting immigrant families’ access to public assistance and legal status. Mamdani has also criticized Trump’s Middle East policies, notably the administration’s support for Israel during the Gaza conflict.
During Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, Trump had labeled him a “communist,” yet appeared more amenable after a personal meeting. Despite this cooperation, Trump criticized Mamdani-backed candidates in June, calling them “communists.” Trump declared, “I want what’s good for New York,” despite their differences, voicing his hope for Mamdani’s success as mayor.
Trump’s remarks raised eyebrow among conservatives, including Laura Loomer. She criticized the cooperation, arguing Mamdani’s policies conflicted with Trump’s agenda. The meeting was the third between the two, and Mamdani confirmed they communicate via calls and text messages.

During a February meeting at the White House, Trump and Mamdani discussed housing policy. To illustrate, Mamdani’s team created a mock front page of the New York Daily News with the headline, “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” This was a nod to President Ford’s historical stance in the 1970s.
Trump has long been interested in construction and how projects appear in media. On Monday, they revisited New York City’s housing challenges, specifically the Sunnyside Yards redevelopment project, requiring federal approval and investment.

Trump and Mamdani shared a cordial meeting post-Mamdani’s victory over Andrew Cuomo. Trump acknowledged unexpected agreements with Mamdani and expressed willingness to support him.
Despite past threats to cut federal funding if Mamdani won, Trump offered assistance, even light-heartedly dismissing Mamdani’s “fascist” remarks. Mamdani noted the productive talks and shared goals of city affordability.
Democratic socialism, supported by Mamdani and others like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calls for reducing economic inequality through democratically managed systems. Proposals often include healthcare, education, and labor protections.
These stances have invited conservative criticism of Mamdani, who they argue increases governmental roles, potentially leading to higher taxes and spending.
Conservative figures questioned the rationale behind Trump meeting Mamdani. Laura Loomer remarked, “What did we fight so hard for if we are going to work with the radical left? Mamdani is an Islamic communist.” Meghan McCain and others echoed skepticism over the cooperation, reflecting on the unconventional public relationship between Trump and Mamdani.
