The new Fire Station 25 in Buffalo Grove, located at 505 W. Dundee Road, highlights a significant shift in focus towards the health and safety of firefighters. The station’s grand opening on September 16 saw community members gather to witness the unveiling of this state-of-the-art facility.
Designed by FGM Architects, with construction managed by Frederick Quinn Corp., the project completed slightly under its $10.1 million budget. This modern facility replaces an outdated, 50-year-old station that had become costly to maintain. Project Manager Adam Slotkus mentioned, ‘At some point, 50 years catches up with you.’
Village President Eric Smith emphasized that the new station is more than just a building. ‘It’s a commitment to public safety, preparedness, and to those who respond during emergencies,’ he stated. The facility equips firefighters with advanced space, equipment, and resources necessary for optimum performance.
Fire Chief Larry Kane, along with Deputy Chief Shawn Collins, highlighted several innovative features during the tour. The station is equipped with high-speed overhead doors, enhancing response times while conserving energy during winter. These doors, along with environmentally friendly LED lighting guided by occupancy sensors, contribute to a greener operation.
Health concerns, such as cancer risks from exhaust fumes, are addressed through a hose system that extracts exhaust from vehicles and vents it outside. Individual bunk rooms are equipped with climate controls and programmable alerts, minimizing sleep disruptions known to cause cardiovascular and other health issues in firefighters.
The facility also offers an expanded bay capacity and includes a new, lighter rescue squad vehicle geared for rapid paramedic and rescue responses. Deputy Chief Collins noted that the workout room is now three times larger than the previous station’s, enhancing fitness opportunities. ‘Fitness is key to longevity in this demanding job,’ Collins advised firefighters.
The opening of Buffalo Grove’s Fire Station 25 marks a new chapter, prioritizing both firefighter welfare and the effective delivery of emergency services to the community.
