Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is skipping the United Nations General Assembly this week. An official confirmed the decision to Fox News Digital. This marks a break in a 15-year tradition where the Italian prime minister participated in the UN General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, as noted by Associated Medias. The 2020 assembly was largely virtual due to the pandemic.
Meloni explained her absence by citing a packed schedule. She attended six summits over three and a half weeks and stated she had “several dossiers” to manage at home. By not attending, Meloni and other leaders avoid another face-to-face meeting amidst growing public tensions.
“We believe the United Nations [is] the basic instrument for achieving peace everywhere,” said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani before the summit, according to ANSA. “There is great attention from the Italian side.”
The tension between Meloni and U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated. It began in June after Trump claimed Meloni “begged” for a photo at the G7. Tensions initially surfaced when Meloni opposed U.S. military action against Iran and criticized Trump’s comments about Pope Leo XIV. Despite past warmth between the leaders, recent interactions show strain.
In July, Meloni and Trump exchanged barbs before the NATO summit in Turkey. Trump posted “RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED” on Truth, with a photo of Meloni. Meloni retaliated, stating Trump’s claims were “completely made up” and asserting, “neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
“Trump’s statements against Meloni speak for themselves,” Tajani said at a Sky TG24 event. “Transatlantic relations go beyond individual statements.”
In an interview with Italy’s La7 after the G7, Trump ridiculed Meloni’s supposed eagerness for a picture, saying, “She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.” Meloni retorted, “I can only say it is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and of the United States.”
Amidst these tensions, Italian-U.S. relations are complex. Italy hosts nearly 13,000 U.S. troops across various bases, making it a crucial security hub. President Trump continues engaging with other world leaders concerning the situation with Iran.
Tajani is expected to speak at the conference. Meanwhile, the dynamics between Italy and the U.S. remain under close scrutiny.
