Fatal Michigan Crash Involving ICE Agents Under Investigation
In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a fatal car crash occurred over the weekend after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempted to stop a vehicle, according to police reports. The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) confirmed the incident on Tuesday. The crash claimed the life of Mario David Coronado Juarez, a Guatemalan national residing in the area for seven years.
Relatives identified Coronado Juarez as the victim, highlighting that he was undocumented and had established his life in Grand Rapids. On September 20, 2026, authorities reported that ICE agents tried to stop his vehicle, leading to the crash. According to a GRPD release, officers were dispatched to the scene around 7 a.m. after the car struck a tree and ignited.
GRPD stated that Coronado Juarez was alone in the vehicle and was pronounced dead on site. Neighbors recounted hearing a loud noise at the time of the crash, describing it as a ‘sonic boom.’ One witness noted witnessing what appeared to be unmarked law enforcement vehicles at the scene. “That’s immigration right there,” the neighbor remarked, pointing at an unmarked vehicle in a video captured on his phone.
Witnesses observed several individuals wearing gear similar to bulletproof vests, suggesting an operation by immigration authorities. Local police and fire services arrived shortly after the initial responders, aiding in handling the aftermath of the crash.
The neighbor expressed concerns over ICE’s enforcement actions, indicating that Coronado Juarez was employed in construction and not engaging in criminal activity. “[ICE] try to treat them like criminals, when they’re not,” he commented.
Coronado Juarez’s family, left behind in Guatemala, included his children who depended on his financial support. A friend remembered him as a dedicated worker, committed to supporting his family across borders.
In light of the incident, GRPD has sought assistance from the Michigan State Police for the inquiry. The spokesperson mentioned challenges in acquiring details from federal authorities concerning the events leading up to the crash. With additional input from the State Police, the investigation aims to clarify the sequence of events and determine suitable next steps.
GRPD clarified they had no prior involvement until the crash report was received. The Department of Homeland Security had not commented immediately following media inquiries.
