Resignation of Kurt Olsen from the Justice Department’s Investigation Team

Kurt Olsen, known for challenging the 2020 election results in favor of President Trump, has resigned from the Justice Department. Sources acquainted with his departure confirmed this news to CBS on Monday.

Olsen recently served at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. He was part of the investigative team working on a ‘grand conspiracy’ involving officials from the Obama and Biden administrations. This investigation has not led to any charges yet. CBS sought commentary from Olsen, but no response was received.

Earlier this month, Joe diGenova, another prosecutor, resigned due to disagreements with senior officials about case management and progress. DiGenova was appointed by Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Olsen previously held a position in the White House as a ‘Presidentially appointed Director of Election Security and Integrity,’ according to the FBI. In 2020, he collaborated with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in an unsuccessful effort to have the Supreme Court overturn the election results.

In 2022, the House January 6 committee subpoenaed Olsen, alleging his involvement with high-level Justice Department officials to challenge the election results at President Trump’s behest. The committee recorded Olsen as having multiple communications with Trump on January 6, 2021.

Olsen initiated a referral that led the FBI to search Fulton County for election materials, seizing numerous boxes per an affidavit. He made several similar referrals regarding the 2020 election.

CBS News reported concerns among law enforcement veterans. They worry the Trump-period criminal investigation is agenda-driven, appointing personnel for political motives aimed at certain indictments.

Olsen is not the only prosecutor to exit. More team members departed, potentially due to the temporary nature of their assignments. They were from outside and now return to their original offices.

Despite these changes, the Justice Department hired two former prosecutors for the investigation. This information comes from a reliable source.
