Reid and Connor Hites, two brothers from Lincoln Park, have a traditional football story with a unique twist. Instead of a backyard, they had a turfed patio over their garage. This space became their playground, where they practiced tackling and played catch.
Connor, the older sibling, initially played receiver but now dominates as a hybrid linebacker for St. Ignatius. Reid, on the other hand, is the team’s starting quarterback. Their team, known as the Wolfpack, holds a 5-1 record and ranks 13th in the Chicago Tribune’s top 25.
Connor, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 205 pounds, has received scholarship offers from Division I schools, choosing to play for Penn in the Ivy League, following in his father Kevin’s footsteps, who played at Brown.
“He’s a college nickel, and that’s become very popular,” said Coach Matt Miller. “He’s a smaller linebacker who can cover. This role is highly sought after.”
Though he may not look intimidating, Connor plays with an intensity reminiscent of old-school Catholic League linebackers. Coach Miller praises his fearless approach to contact.
Reid was to be the starting quarterback last season but broke his arm during a practice game. After recovering, he led a significant win streak for St. Ignatius, including a Prep Bowl victory. Reid expressed some initial difficulty upon his return but adjusted quickly.
In recent years, St. Ignatius experienced playoff success but faced a tough schedule. Reassigned to the CCL Orange division this season, they defeated several top-ranking teams and now prepare for a challenging match against No. 2 Loyola.
“Everybody on our team thought this is how the season would go,” Connor said. “We have high standards and expectations, especially after past seasons where we were underestimated.”
While St. Ignatius is not primarily known for football, it offers stunning practice field views of the Chicago skyline. The Hites family, originally from Valparaiso, Indiana, and Akron, Ohio, embraced city life.
Reid notes, “We were born in California and moved here for my dad’s job. Our parents love city life and don’t care much for rural areas.” The Hites brothers have certainly brought success, along with a remarkable view, to their team.
