Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was held in Russia for over a year before his release through a significant prisoner swap in 2024. He recently spoke on ‘Fox & Friends’ about his detention and his newly published book, ‘This Cursed Beautiful Land.’
Detention in Russia
Gershkovich detailed how he was reporting on Russia’s preparations for a military economy when he was detained. He explained that a meeting with a source turned out to be a setup, leading to his arrest. Gershkovich vividly recalled the moment he realized the Federal Security Service (FSB), rather than the police, had detained him. This indicated a high-level operation against him.
At that moment, when you hear FSB, it’s clear that it’s not a misunderstanding.
He described the harsh treatment he faced, including physical assault, and how he was accused of espionage.
Conviction and Advocacy
He was arrested on March 29, 2023, while in Yekaterinburg. The Biden administration termed his detainment as ‘wrongfully detained,’ denying the espionage charge. Despite claims of a sham conviction, he was sentenced to 16 years in a penal colony. Efforts by various groups and individuals kept his case in the public eye, advocating for his release.
Prisoner Swap Developments
Gershkovich shared a pivotal moment during his imprisonment when he thought a swap involving him, Paul Whelan, and the late Alexei Navalny for Vadim Krasikov was possible. However, news of Navalny’s death cast doubt on any potential swap. Despite this setback, a successful exchange involving multiple countries eventually led to his release in August 2024.
Release and Return
He and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan were released as part of a multinational swap. His return to the U.S. marked the end of a grueling experience, as his family and friends welcomed him back.
Gershkovich’s account highlights the complex geopolitics and personal challenges of those wrongfully detained abroad.
