The New York Knicks are celebrating success with their NBA championship win after over five decades. As the new season approaches, attention focuses on star player Karl-Anthony Towns, who played a pivotal role in their playoff triumph.
During the Knicks’ playoff run last season, Towns, a six-time All-Star, contributed significantly. His performance averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.3 blocks and steals per game. He shot with remarkable accuracy, achieving 55.1% from the field and 45.6% from three-point range, making him a dominating presence throughout the postseason.
However, Towns’ future with the Knicks is uncertain. He is eligible for a substantial contract worth up to $276 million over four years. Yet, the Knicks seek to offer him a deal significantly less than this amount. Reports from The Athletic’s James Edwards suggest that the difference in their contract negotiations might carry into the regular season.
Despite Towns expressing a desire to remain in New York and a willingness to accept a pay cut, he finds the Knicks’ reduced offer unacceptably low. This conflict creates an uneasy atmosphere in New York as the team prepares to defend their title in the upcoming 2026-27 season.
The Knicks aim to manage their finances to avoid steep league tax penalties while maintaining their championship roster. Towns, on the other hand, qualifies for a maximum deal, potentially becoming the highest-paid player earning approximately $69 million annually. He is already contracted to earn $57.1 million in the upcoming season, reaffirming his significant market value.
Towns holds further bargaining power with a $61.1 million player option for the 2027-28 season. Should the Knicks and Towns fail to reach a satisfactory agreement, he may enter free agency after the coming season, adding urgency to their negotiations.
