Newly released police body camera footage provides insight into the apprehension of Luigi Mangione by Altoona, Pennsylvania, police officers. The arrest marked the conclusion of a five-day manhunt following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in 2024.
The footage, aired for the first time outside a courtroom, shows Mangione being handcuffed and the subsequent property search. This content was later used in a suppression hearing in December 2025, where defense attorneys argued that his backpack search violated his rights.
In December 2024, police responded to a 911 call reporting a man believed to be the shooter eating breakfast at a McDonald’s in Altoona. Body camera footage captures officers questioning Mangione about a fake driver’s license bearing the name ‘Mark Rosario’. He eventually disclosed his true identity, admitting he ‘shouldn’t have’ lied about himself.
The footage also details Mangione’s transport to the police station, where a strip search was conducted. Investigators found a firearm in his backpack, linked by prosecutors to the crime scene. Despite defense objections, a state judge ruled most evidence from the search admissible at trial.
Police actions during the arrest raised questions with legal experts due to apparent lack of concern for safety. Richard Shorenstein noted that officers in the footage did not appear worried, contradicting prosecution claims that the backpack search was a safety necessity.
Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking via interstate facilities resulting in death. He also faces state charges for second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery, although a previous first-degree murder charge was dismissed in his state trial. His federal sentencing is scheduled for December, while decisions regarding further state proceedings remain undecided.
Key figures involved include Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, and Richard Shorenstein.
