Attorney Criticizes Arizona State University After Hockey Player Incident
An Arizona State University hockey player, Matthew Mayich, remains incapacitated after a strenuous workout during a heat wave. The family’s attorney, Rob Carey, has condemned the university’s handling of the situation and is demanding the immediate dismissal of the head coach, who is currently on paid leave.
In related sports news, Pittsburgh Penguins player Andrei Kuzmenko has rejoined the team following his father’s tragic death in Siberia. Alexander Kuzmenko was killed in a bear attack during a fishing trip, after valiantly fighting the bear for over an hour. Andrei, now 30 and in his first season with the Penguins, has chosen to honor his father by changing his jersey number.
Addressing the press at the team’s practice facility before their game against the Montreal Canadiens, Kuzmenko expressed his understanding of the media’s need to report on the story. He recounted the details of his father’s fishing expedition, which ended in tragedy when his father was attacked from behind by a bear while in the water.
Andrei Kuzmenko signed with the Penguins in the summer, initially wearing No. 10 during the preseason. He has since switched to No. 62, a gesture full of personal meaning as it relates to his father’s age and his mother’s birth year. Kuzmenko previously wore No. 96 throughout his NHL career with teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings.
Before joining the NHL in the 2022-23 season, Kuzmenko played in the KHL. He has participated in 271 NHL games, earning 182 points with 85 goals and 97 assists.
