Mason Auslander Secures Starting Role Amid Varsity Challenge
This summer, Mason Auslander, a junior at Highland Park, entered his first varsity football camp eager to impress. Competing for a position at cornerback, he recognized the need to understand opposing offenses and receivers. But he also understood the importance of staying aware of his environment.
“It was my first year facing older, bigger players,” Auslander reflected. “I embraced the challenge. It was all about effort.” This determination secured him a starting role.
Maintaining Performance Under Pressure
As Auslander approached Week 1 with an away game against Leyden, he focused on maintaining his status for the upcoming home game. “The second game at home was phenomenal,” he shared. “Yet, I knew the competition behind me was fierce. Mistakes could cost me my spot, and I couldn’t afford that.”
Auslander has proven his resolve, evidenced by his third interception during a 37-16 victory over Deerfield. “He’s delivered crucial plays,” Highland Park coach Anthony Kopp praised. “Auslander has quickly become a top defender and a reliable player.”
Defensive Prowess Drives Team Success
Auslander’s efforts have been pivotal for Highland Park’s strong performance. The team shut out Deerfield’s starters, and limited Glenbrook North and Maine East to seven points each in previous games. Deerfield managed only 45 yards in the first half, while Highland Park accumulated a 23-0 lead.
Auslander’s interception of Deerfield’s quarterback Cooper Crane was among three takeaways. “Knowing the quarterback and receiver tendencies from middle school was beneficial,” Auslander noted. “When the ball was up, my job was clear.”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence
Auslander’s emergence is built on newfound confidence and overcoming pressure from summer trials. “Fear was a factor with multiple cornerbacks vying for spots,” Auslander stated. “However as receivers targeted you without sympathy, my determination increased.”
Auslander’s intensified defensive skills are evident on the field. “His coverage and tackling abilities have improved dramatically,” senior receiver Max Stevens commented. “His technique, speed, and confidence are noticeable.”
Auslander credits his older brother Spencer, a former safety, for his development. “Growing up with him pushed me through limits,” Auslander shared. “His guidance taught me to strive for excellence.”
