Youth sports are often mistaken for a path to stardom, emulating figures like Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Judge. But their essence lies in providing a solid community. Former NFL Pro Bowl running back Jonathan Stewart underscores this vital principle. Stewart, who played 11 seasons in the NFL, now coaches a middle school football team with former Carolina Panthers teammates Greg Olsen and Luke Kuechly.
According to Stewart, youth sports cultivate an environment that extends beyond the field. It’s a platform for kids to build lifelong positive habits.
Youth sports don’t aim to create NFL stars. They give your child a community. Kids learn to prioritize their time, focusing on studies, responsibilities at home, and team commitments as they grow into young adults,Stewart shared with OutKick.
While the credentials of Stewart and his coaching team at Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina are impressive, Stewart emphasizes mentorship over accolades.
The middle schoolers under their mentorship are seen as highly impressionable, eager to learn, and open to constructive guidance. Stewart appreciates this age for their receptiveness and genuine curiosity.
These young minds are like sponges. They want to learn and trust the guidance given to them. They seek belonging and purpose among their peers, said Stewart.
Through sports, children find a sense of community not limited to football. Be it baseball, basketball, or any other sport, the camaraderie formed within teams aids in social development. Stewart acknowledges the pivotal role of youth sports in preventing loneliness and uncertainty often faced during middle school years.
Although Stewart never envisioned himself as a coach, the involvement of his daughters at Charlotte Christian School prompted his active participation. This engagement has also sparked their interest in the sport.
Sharing these experiences connects us as a family. My daughters enjoy the games and ask questions, growing to appreciate football as part of our family’s history,Stewart elaborated.
Stewart views football as a lesson in selflessness, responsibility, and self-discovery. Seeing children grow through these experiences is rewarding for him.
One standout is a dedicated player named Jack. Despite being smaller in size, his commitment and effort make him a reliable teammate. Stewart shares an anecdote about Jack’s impressive performance, highlighting his growth in confidence and skill.
Outside of sports, Stewart emphasizes maintaining overall health, including oral hygiene. He incorporates Panthers-themed oral products in his routine, likening oral care to essential components of a healthy lifestyle.
Oral hygiene is crucial. It’s as important as exercise and diet in maintaining overall health,Stewart noted.
Reflecting on his 10 seasons with the Panthers and one with the Giants, Stewart recalls his career milestones, rushing for over 7,000 yards and making the Pro Bowl in 2015.
