In 1979, Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert responded to the NFL’s tightening of roughing the passer rules by suggesting, “it might be a good idea to put dresses on all of them.” As the league continues to add rules to protect quarterbacks, injuries persist. By Week 4 of the current season, six starting quarterbacks have already faced injuries.
Despite rules designed to protect players, the physical nature of football continues to lead to injuries at the quarterback position. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was recently helped off the field with an apparent injury against the Minnesota Vikings. The incident occurred during the second half of the game at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts believes new rules won’t necessarily prevent injuries. In a recent interview, Fouts mentioned, “It’s a violent game. Defenders are more athletic than offensive linemen. The variety of blitzes contributes to the risk.” While the NFL changes rules to protect quarterbacks, the sport’s physicality is unavoidable.
The New York Giants face the significant challenge of losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season. Dart recently underwent surgery after sustaining a meniscus injury. Other injured quarterbacks like Sam Darnold and Kyler Murray have returned or are expected to return this season.
Teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, and Chicago Bears have managed to win with backup quarterbacks. However, their performances were noticeably different without starters. A deep reliance on backup or third-string quarterbacks can change a team’s trajectory quickly.
Dan Fouts, who had a 15-season career with the San Diego Chargers and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, emphasized the need for strong offensive line play to protect quarterbacks rather than relying solely on rule changes.
