The Biden administration’s FBI monitored travel and communication involving key figures from Donald Trump’s inner circle. Newly declassified documents show that federal officials tracked travel by the Trump family and surveilled phone calls of future White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles as part of the classified documents investigation concerning Trump. This operation, codenamed “Plasmic Echo,” aimed to determine whether Trump retained classified documents after his presidency.
Investigation Details
Documents released by the White House on Monday provide details of the investigation led by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Agents monitored travel plans of the First Lady and Barron Trump while preparing the Mar-a-Lago search warrant. Additionally, they surveilled Susie Wiles’ phone calls, which involved defense lawyers, campaign advisers, and journalists. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis criticized the investigation, labeling it an abuse of governmental power and called for accountability.
Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing
These revelations emerged shortly after Jack Smith faced scrutiny during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. The hearing addressed his investigative methods in a separate inquiry into Trump’s 2020 election challenges, known as “Arctic Frost.” The FBI’s investigation into the classified documents, “Plasmic Echo,” culminated in the 2022 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago.
Newly uncovered operational planning emails from May 2022 indicate that agents developed detailed plans for executing the Mar-a-Lago search warrant. They needed to finalize travel details of Trump, the First Lady, and their son before executing any search warrants, as per their checklist. A document from June 1, 2022, confirmed that searches were to occur once Trump was no longer present at Mar-a-Lago.
Mar-a-Lago Search Execution
On August 8, 2022, agents carried out a search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. They entered the property before 9 a.m. and initiated their search by 10:30 a.m. The warrant permitted them to search Trump’s “45 Office,” storage spaces, and other areas holding documents. Agents seized thousands of documents, with over 100 marked as confidential, secret, or top secret. These were found in Trump’s office and storage areas.
The declassified documents highlight that the high-level investigation began with FBI Director Christopher Wray receiving Attorney General Merrick Garland’s approval in March 2022. This authorization allowed the investigation into classified records at Mar-a-Lago to proceed. Despite this, internal disagreements at the FBI emerged, with the Washington Field Office expressing doubts about the probable cause for the search warrant and debating the strategy with the main Department of Justice.
Surveillance of Susie Wiles
Besides monitoring the Trump family, officials also tracked Susie Wiles’ communications between February and May 2023. The FBI maintained logs of her phone activity, cataloging calls, messages, and voicemails. These records showed her interactions with numerous defense attorneys for Trump, political advisors, campaign aides, staff from the Trump Organization, and journalists.
The monitoring of Wiles’ phone continued through her witness interviews with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team. Her interactions were logged both before and after her interviews, including an April 7, 2023 interview in Jacksonville, Florida.
