East Dundee Village President Dan Pearson Censured for Political Activities
East Dundee Village President Dan Pearson faced formal censure from the village board for inviting two Republicans, including gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, to speak at the village’s Oktoberfest. The board’s unanimous decision also addressed other concerning actions and comments by Pearson.
Trustee Scott Kunze emphasized that the censure isn’t solely about politicians speaking at the event. He noted a series of actions had cost the village significant legal fees. Pearson had shared photos with Bailey at an Illinois Municipal League conference on his Facebook page.
The censure doesn’t carry legal penalties or remove an official from office. It’s a formal statement condemning inappropriate or unethical behavior. Recently, the Kane County state’s attorney’s office received a complaint about Pearson’s conduct at Oktoberfest, alleging a breach of state election laws by using public funds for political promotion.
The resolution stemmed from Pearson inviting Bailey and 8th District Congressional candidate Jennifer Davis to Oktoberfest on September 26. Bailey campaigned for support against Gov. JB Pritzker. Pearson also mentioned another candidate for Kane County Board District 21, suggesting preferential treatment of certain candidates.
Pearson missed the Monday meeting due to a vacation. Earlier, he issued an apology at a joint meeting of the village board and other committees on September 28. The trustees criticized his use of a village event for political purposes, causing a negative impact on the community.
Trustee Matt Oclon called for maintaining professionalism in office, supporting the censure. Some residents thanked the board for its action but felt it was insufficient. Longtime resident Karla Burke urged Pearson to resign, stressing that all officials should adhere to ethical standards.
Resident Allison Moe criticized Pearson’s stance on English as America’s language, questioning his representation of the community. She hoped Pearson would learn from the incident.
The censure resolution stated Pearson didn’t fully accept responsibility for his Oktoberfest conduct. Future expectations include not using village resources or events for political promotion and maintaining dignified communication.
Trustee Andy Sauder noted significant community response to the incident. He stressed local government should avoid divisive politics. Sauder mentioned steps to prevent future partisan actions, including staff training.
Trustee Kathleen Mahony stated Pearson’s actions overshadowed Oktoberfest’s success and the hard work of volunteers and staff.
