Lake County voters began election season early on Tuesday, signaling a promising turnout for the November general election. Elections and Registration Director Michelle Fajman remains upbeat about the voter engagement, noting, “As it gets closer to the election, the lines get a little bit longer. So if you know who you’re going to vote for, just come out and get it done.”
In Porter County, the enthusiasm for early voting was evident at the Porter County Administration Building, where voters lined up down the hallway from the vote center located in the basement conference room. Michael and Marcia Foreman, along with Rose Ross, all from Valparaiso, were eager to cast their votes early. Michael emphasized the importance of having their voices heard, while Marcia cited convenience and reduced crowding as reasons for their early participation. Ross echoed the sentiment, preferring to avoid long lines in cold weather and expressing uncertainty about other voting locations.
By 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Lake County had received 511 mail-in ballots, compared to 972 on the first day in 2022. The number of early voters reached 1,549, excluding figures from Lowell Town Hall. “We’re already more than halfway to what we did on the first day four years ago,” said Fajman.
The Lake County Board of Elections added a new early voting day on Sunday, Oct. 25, responding to public demand and aiming to accommodate those unable to vote on Election Day. On Oct. 25, voting will take place at multiple locations including the Lake County Government Center, the main Gary Public Library, and Munster Town Hall, among others.
Early voting in Porter County is available through Nov. 2, with varying hours across different days. Locations include Chesterton Town Hall, Hebron Community Center, and the Porter County Administration Building. Longtime voter Frank Baccino shared his experience from the Lake County Government Center, where early voters reported smooth operations and no issues.
Crown Point resident Jaranata Sharp voted early to avoid long lines. “I was thinking it would be long because every time I vote, it’s usually a long line. But I came earlier, and it was really nice,” she said. Other voters like Arnold Reyes and Gwenell White Sandifer also shared their experiences, with issues such as affordability and immigration policy high on their agendas.
Charlotte Sterling from Valparaiso was motivated to vote early due to previous personal experiences with an elected official. She noted, “To be completely honest, and I’m embarrassed, I’ve never voted in a local election,” but was driven to participate following a family tragedy.
Lastly, Valparaiso residents such as JoEllen Raby and Raymond Riddell described their experiences at the polls. Riddell faced a minor issue due to an unexpected mail-in ballot status, which was resolved by polling staff.
