Jesse Bradley, a former professional soccer player and chaplain for the Seattle Sounders, highlights the remarkable journey of the U.S. Men’s National Team at the 2026 World Cup. The team has made history by winning its first two group stage matches since 1930. The team’s public expression of faith, including Bible studies and prayer sessions after games, has been noted as inspiring and unifying for Americans, boosting the sport’s popularity across the nation.
Recently, the U.S. faced a thrilling sports rivalry against Canada with another triumph for the Stars and Stripes. Although it was an international friendly match, the victory was significant. The match took place in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the U.S. defeated Canada, 1-0. This completion of their international break remained undefeated following a challenging loss to Belgium in the World Cup’s Round of 16.
Despite Christian Pulisic’s absence due to recovery from injury, other players rose to the occasion against a formidable Canadian squad. Justin Ellis, a 19-year-old athlete from Florida who plays for Orlando City SC, scored the decisive goal. His contribution highlights his potential, reinforcing why he was called up by manager Mauricio Pochettino for friendlies against Peru, Chile, and Mexico before the meeting with Canada.
Ellis, also eligible to represent Uruguay, proved his worth by scoring in the 29th minute with an assist from World Cup standout Alex Freeman. This was his second goal in the friendlies; his first was a successful free-kick goal against Peru.
The U.S. team’s preparation included impressive victories. They defeated Peru 4-1, Chile 4-2, and Mexico 3-0, which speaks to the ongoing development overseen by Pochettino. These matches contribute positively to the players’ confidence as they return to their clubs worldwide.
The victory over Canada adds to a series of U.S. sporting successes. Earlier in the year, the U.S. won gold medals in both men’s and women’s ice hockey during the Winter Olympics and overcame Canada 5-3 in the World Baseball Classic group stage.
