Grief and Memory: A Mother Reflects
The mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli American who was found deceased in Gaza nearly a year after being abducted, shared her enduring grief. Taken from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, Hersh’s mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, conveyed to NBC News that grief remains present and intense. She holds hope that the nature of grief might change but shared, “Time makes you more hungry or more thirsty for your person.”
Hersh was one of six hostages held by Hamas, whose remains were discovered in a tunnel under the southern Gaza city of Rafah in September 2024. Born in the United States, he moved to Israel at age seven. Rachel Goldberg-Polin expressed concerns that her grief may intensify, explaining, “That yearning, that longing, that craving is forever.” She recounted a moment when overcome with sorrow, she told her daughter, “I haven’t seen my son in three years.”
Global Vigilance for Israelis
On the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Israel’s National Security Council released a warning to Israelis abroad. The statement highlighted an “increased risk of attempted attacks against Israelis and Jews abroad.” Citizens are advised to exercise “heightened vigilance,” particularly by avoiding sharing travel details on social media and refraining from posting content indicating service in security forces.
The advisory also recommends against traveling to regions like Jordan, Qatar, Somaliland, and Egypt, and advises minimizing the use of Hebrew in crowded areas.
Remembering an ‘Ordinary’ Young Man
Rachel Goldberg-Polin described her son Hersh as “totally ordinary” despite the tendency to mythologize those lost tragically, especially young people. She emphasized that Hersh was a “perfect match” who possessed both beauty and flaws. Hersh, one of the hostages recovered after being held by Hamas, exemplified ordinary, relatable qualities, according to his mother.
Nationwide Remembrance in Israel
Israel commemorated the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks with a nationwide moment of silence. This occurred at 6:29 a.m. local time, marking the time when the Hamas assault began in 2023. President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog participated in the memorial by lighting a candle at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem. This act initiated a day of remembrance and reflection for many across the nation.
