Campaign Spending Scrutiny: Vicente Gonzalez
A House Democrat criticized a Republican opponent for using donor money for personal enjoyment at Disney World. However, records show Democratic Texas Rep. Vicente Gonzalez spent around $20,000 from his campaign on international and domestic trips with his wife, including visits to Disney World, a luxury hotel in the UAE, and a Michelin-star restaurant in Zurich.
Gonzalez’s criticism targeted Republican Mayra Flores in October 2025. It followed Gonzalez’s posts displaying photos of his own trip to Disney World in April, funded by campaign expenses totaling over $1,100, as per his social media posts.
“Living the good life on donor’s resources again,” Gonzalez remarked of Flores in social media posts, referencing a report detailing her campaign’s Disney payments.
Despite criticism, Gonzalez’s Federal Election Commission filings show similar expenditures. For instance, his campaign paid over $1,100 to Walt Disney Resorts around the time he visited it with his family.
Federal rules permit campaign funds to cover travel costs for candidates, their spouses, and children when related to campaign activities. However, funds cannot cover personal vacations.
“Every campaign dollar is legal and disclosed,” Gonzalez’s campaign manager stated, responding to inquiries about the spending.
Financial records revealed Gonzalez’s campaign labeled these Disney payments as “travel expenses.” Gonzalez’s campaign manager noted the trip was for a “Financial Services” event alongside Rep. French Hill, a committee chairman.
Reports show Gonzalez’s international travel expenses involved his wife on several occasions linked to official business, such as visiting the Pope. For example, a 2019 trip to Morocco with his wife was under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act, which allows government-sponsored cultural exchanges.
His campaign covered $4,767.53 for this trip under “spouse travel expense.” Additionally, a 2024 Abu Dhabi trip cost included a $13,000 expense on luxury accommodations, cited as CODEL (Congressional Delegation) expenses in campaign records.
In August 2025, Gonzalez disclosed a Zurich, Switzerland trip with his wife. Campaign records indicate costs of over $560 for airfare and $395 at a Michelin-star restaurant.
Gonzalez justified these trips via social media, labeling them as necessary meetings and events.
Between 2024 and 2026, Gonzalez reported substantial expenditures at high-end restaurants and resorts, including The Capital Grille and Eddie V’s Prime Seafood in various cities.
