Washington Commanders fans faced frustration on Monday after a disappointing game against the New York Giants ended in a tie. A major misstep occurred when Jayden Daniels ran out the clock in overtime, leaving the team without a chance to attempt a game-winning field goal. The incident was particularly troubling given the scrutiny from Washington’s ownership.
Magic Johnson, who invested in the Commanders’ franchise as part of Josh Harris’ $6.05 billion purchase, expressed his disapproval on social media. Johnson seldom voices criticism publicly, highlighting the extent of his disappointment with the game’s outcome.
I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants. All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!
Magic Johnson’s remarks resonated with the Commanders’ fans. During the game, the team took a promising lead of 27-13 after Daniels scored on a 26-yard run. However, Giants quarterback Jameis Winston led a comeback, tying the game at 27-27.
In a post-game press conference, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn accepted responsibility for the clock management error. Quinn stated, “The sequencing of that does not fall on Daniels. It’s an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot.”
If Giants’ rookie kicker Dominic Zvada had not missed three crucial field goals, discussions might have taken a different direction. Despite the Commanders’ setback, Quinn emphasized the need for better planning, saying, “I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards.”
Washington’s current season record stands at 1-3-1. The frustration experienced by fans and Magic Johnson alike underscores the significance of precision in sports strategy.
