Senate Debate Highlights Tensions in South Carolina
Senate Debate in South Carolina
During the recent South Carolina U.S. Senate debate, Republican Senator Darline Graham and her Democratic opponent Annie Andrews faced off. Libertarian candidate Kasie Whitener also participated. The discussion became heated as Graham criticized the Democratic Party.
Graham’s Criticism
Graham expressed her concerns about ‘socialist Democrats,’ mentioning that after the attack by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, Democrats in New York were allegedly celebrating. She accused Andrews of aligning with the socialist wing of her party, claiming, “Annie Andrews will not stand up to the socialist Democratic Party. She’s only going to join them.”
“Annie Andrews will not stand up to the socialist Democratic Party. She’s only going to join them,” said Graham.
Andrews’ Response
Andrews countered these accusations, stating her willingness to challenge her own party. Referring to previous attacks where she was called a socialist, she pointed out the scripted nature of Graham’s remarks. Andrews emphasized her commitment to South Carolina, stating, “The real difference between me and Sen. Graham is that I will stand up to my own party and I will always put South Carolina first.”
“I told you my opponent was going to call me a socialist and there she’s done it again,” Andrews remarked.
Personal Attacks and Name Confusion
The debate included personal disputes about Graham’s name. Andrews commented that her opponent’s use of different names was confusing, while Graham clarified that her “legal name is Graham,” a name she retained to feel connected to her deceased parents. She affirmed, “So my name, every document I have ever signed, has Graham on it.”
“I lost my parents when I was a little girl, and I kept the name Graham so that I felt connected to them,” Graham explained.
Background on Graham’s Appointment
Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to her current Senate position following the passing of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Now, she seeks election for a full six-year term, with support from former President Donald Trump.
