Texas Governor Criticizes Lawsuit Over Musk Communications
Texas Governor Greg Abbott dismissed a lawsuit by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa. The lawsuit sought access to confidential communications between Abbott’s office and Elon Musk’s companies. Abbott labeled it a “lazy political stunt.”
Hinojosa, a state representative, is challenging Abbott in the upcoming election. She filed the lawsuit on the first day of early voting in Texas. Abbott’s office had denied her request to inspect unredacted records involving Musk and his businesses in the state.
The lawsuit is baseless and nothing more than an act of desperation,
said Andrew Mahaleris, Abbott’s press secretary. He added that Texans view the lawsuit as a political move. Abbott echoed these sentiments, accusing Hinojosa of seeking attention for her campaign.
Hinojosa Seeks Musk Records
Hinojosa argued her role as a state lawmaker allows her to review the communications. Her request expressed concerns over tech giants’ influence in Texas regarding tax dollars and resources.
At a Travis County courthouse event, she emphasized the need for government transparency and Musk’s growing influence in Texas. She noted Musk’s $500,000 campaign contribution to Abbott and the $1.7 billion in tax breaks Musk received.
Content of Confidential Documents
The lawsuit centers on a 2025 records request by The Texas Newsroom. Hinojosa sought communications between Abbott’s office and Musk or his companies. Abbott’s office resisted releasing the records, citing legal protections such as attorney-client privilege and competitive interests.
In 2025, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton partially upheld these objections. However, he directed some material to be released. The office produced 1,374 pages of documents, but Hinojosa’s lawsuit claims only 200 pages were not redacted. She requested access to all withheld materials for legislative purposes, offering to sign a confidentiality agreement. Abbott’s office denied her request, leading to the lawsuit.
Abbott’s lawyers argued Hinojosa sought records for her campaign rather than legislative duties. The lawsuit also cites reports of Texas officials discussing the sale of Boca Chica State Park to Musk’s SpaceX, raising further transparency concerns.
The legal dispute unfolds as Abbott seeks a fourth term while intensifying criticism of Hinojosa.
