The San Francisco 49ers are navigating a challenging season start as their star receiver, Mike Evans, struggles with Achilles tendinitis. Evans was forced to leave the field during their 23-17 victory over the Washington Commanders. Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that this persistent ailment has kept Evans from participating in recent practices leading up to the Week 6 game.
Shanahan expressed concern over Evans’ chronic Achilles issue, stating, “It’s something that’s bothered him before, and something that has bothered him throughout the week. When you have Achilles tendinitis like he does, it kind of is what it is. It flared up tonight. I hope he recovers throughout the week.” Despite the setback, the team is optimistic, not viewing it as a long-term issue and expecting no additional scans for Evans.
Evans hadn’t practiced all week, a decision Shanahan described as a “pretty close call.” Evans assured Shanahan of his ability to manage the problem based on past experiences in his NFL career. Unfortunately, his confidence didn’t hold, as he exited the game after a 16-yard reception, finishing the match with 94 yards across three catches.
Without Evans, the team’s offense struggled, recording just 72 yards and three points in the second half while failing to convert three consecutive fourth-quarter drives. Receivers Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner collectively managed only 35 yards from two receptions.
The team faced additional setbacks as linebacker Luke Gifford and cornerback Upton Stout sustained groin and shoulder injuries, respectively.
Looking ahead to Week 7, Shanahan remains hopeful that Evans might recover enough to face the Atlanta Falcons. If Evans remains sidelined, Shanahan emphasized the need for the team to step up. Christian Kirk, with two practices completed, remains a potential lineup inclusion. However, fellow receivers Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel Sr. are unlikely to return before the team’s Week 8 open date.
