The Israeli military has commenced large-scale exercises aimed at countering potential surprise border infiltrations and ground raids. These operations, spanning 48 hours, involve multiple divisions and air assets, highlighting rising regional tensions.
The exercises draw a parallel to the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when Egypt and Syria used drills to disguise an impending attack. This historical context raises concerns about potential miscalculations amid current tensions.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has deployed the Northern Command’s 210th Division, the West Bank Division, and the Central Command’s 98th and 96th divisions. The Israeli Air Force is also mobilized to ensure readiness and defense capabilities.
Although the exercises are not directly targeting Iran, they aim to address threats from Iran’s proxies and allies along Israel’s borders, such as those in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Dr. Ehud Eilam, a national security analyst, stated that these movements could either be supported by Iran or represent local initiatives.
“This is a massive exercise, the biggest one in recent years, aimed at protecting the borders,” a former Israeli Ministry of Defense researcher commented. The timing before Israel’s elections on October 27 is intentional, ensuring nothing disrupts the voting process.
Tehran recently demonstrated its capabilities by firing around 30 ballistic missiles, prompting heightened alert levels in Israel due to potential threats to commercial shipping and increased military readiness.
During a recent visit to the IDF’s Central Command, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir highlighted the growing risk of escalation. Reinforcements, such as the 98th Division, have been deployed to enhance security and stability.
The exercises include scenarios that reflect lessons learned from previous attacks, focusing on surprise incursions. Additionally, there is a mutual deterrence aspect, following Iran’s recent military activities.
Recent days saw Israeli fighter jets demonstrate a non-kinetic show of force by flying across Syrian and Iraqi airspace to Iran’s border, showcasing Israel’s operational reach.
Despite exercises serving as deterrence signals, Eilam emphasized the risks of misinterpretations, citing historic examples, such as the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The potential for miscalculation remains high, with both countries vigilant and wary of each other’s movements.
Emma Bussey, a breaking news writer for Fox News Digital, notes how the current climate reflects a delicate balance of readiness without an intention to provoke open conflict.
