California’s High-Speed Rail Project Faces Criticism

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton criticized Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s endorsement of Democratic governors for the 2028 presidential race. During an appearance on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Hilton questioned the effectiveness of such governors by highlighting California’s incomplete high-speed rail project.

Beshear argued that Democratic governors could showcase real accomplishments, distinguishing them from President Donald Trump. He mentioned achievements such as building housing, implying these “receipts” could bolster their candidacies.

“What Democratic governors have are receipts,” Beshear stated. “You can look at, have you built the housing?”

Hilton interjected, questioning if the high-speed rail had been completed. The exchange occurred after Maher discussed California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s potential for the 2028 presidential campaign, despite Newsom not officially announcing his candidacy.

Bill Maher acknowledged Hilton’s critique. “You’re going to have a field day with that. No, you’re right,” he said. Hilton’s campaign manager, Matt Ciepielowski, criticized the project’s ongoing financial burden, highlighting that billions have been spent with no operational service.

“If Andy Beshear thinks California’s high-speed rail is something to brag about, he should try buying a ticket. Billions spent, years behind schedule, and Californians still can’t ride it,” Ciepielowski stated.

Hilton promised to end state funding for the rail project immediately if elected, citing the financial struggle of Californians who are unable to support such ventures.

California state Sen. Tony Strickland also criticized Newsom for the project’s mishandling, referring to unjust travel expenses incurred by consultants, which were discovered by investigators.

“The high-speed fail should have been defunded when Newsom took office in 2019,” Strickland remarked. “Instead, he doubled down on a project that will never be built as originally proposed to Californians.”

The project, initially approved in 2008, has faced significant cost overruns and delays. A recent estimate placed the final price at $126 billion, a steep rise from the initial $33 billion. Construction has yet to see high-speed tracks laid.

An independent investigation uncovered $81,000 in improper consultant travel expenses, alongside $543,000 deemed inappropriate under contracts, including costly transport and leisure activities. The California High-Speed Rail Authority plans corrective measures, such as enhancing oversight and training.

Despite setbacks, the Authority notes progress in construction, having completed 66 major structures with almost 90 miles of guideway in the Central Valley. They emphasize the project’s future transportation and economic benefits.
