California Lawmaker Proposes Dunkin’s Law to Protect Pets
Introduction of Dunkin’s Law
A new legislative initiative, known as Dunkin’s Law, is being introduced by California Congressman James Gallagher. This move comes in response to an incident involving the death of a dog named Dunkin, belonging to influencer couple Madeline White and DJ Andrew Fedyk. Their 2-year-old Bernese mountain dog died after being placed in the care of a Los Angeles-based dog training facility, Smart Dogs Dog Training.
Background and Motivation
Gallagher was influenced by the couple’s tragic experience. He stated, “After hearing Maddie and Andrew’s heartbreaking story, I knew action was necessary.” The couple entrusted their pet to a service that failed them, sparking Gallagher’s resolve to prevent similar incidents.
The congressman mentioned being informed about 117 deceased dogs found at Miranda’s Rescue Animal Sanctuary in Northern California. This discovery further emphasized the need for enhanced accountability in animal caretaker facilities.
Goals of Dunkin’s Law
Dunkin’s Law aims to amend the Animal Welfare Act to protect companion animals at specific facilities. Gallagher aims to create stringent accountability for commercial care facilities, rescues, and shelters. “No family should face what Maddie and Andrew endured,” he asserted.
The legislation promotes a path for pet owners to seek justice when their pets experience harm or neglect. It also addresses unlawful euthanasia practices in animal rescue operations.
Details Surrounding Dunkin’s Death
White and Fedyk left Dunkin for boarding and basic training while traveling in Europe with their daughter. They were later informed that Dunkin died from heatstroke within 36 hours of being at the facility. Fedyk expressed frustration in a public statement, detailing the lack of veterinary attention Dunkin received.
Connection to Miranda’s Rescue
Gallagher’s proposal is also influenced by the situation at Miranda’s Rescue in Northern California. Authorities discovered numerous deceased dogs there in June, leading to an ongoing investigation. The shelter faced temporary closure for code violations but has reopened.
Animal cruelty laws in California entail serious consequences, including felony charges and fines, reflecting the state’s strong stance on animal rights. However, variations exist across other states.
Influencer Couple’s Advocacy
Both White and Fedyk have actively spoken out on social media platforms about their experience. Fedyk, part of the DJ duo Loud Luxury, has called for regulatory reforms in dog training services. He advocates for licensing requirements and accountability for wrongful pet deaths.
White, in a heartfelt post, voiced their determination to attain justice for Dunkin. Their advocacy underscores the deep emotional impact of their loss and rallying for change.
As part of their journey to healing, the couple welcomed a new Bernese Mountain Dog, Carl, into their family.
