Critical Need for Improvement as Ravens Face the Bills After Crushing Defeat

The Baltimore Ravens’ defeat of 35-13 against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7 highlighted several significant challenges. Despite entering halftime with a 13-0 lead, the Ravens allowed 35 unanswered points in the second half, equalling the most they have ever surrendered. This loss resulted in a 4-3 record and an 0-2 standing within the AFC North, placing them at the bottom of their division.

Former Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale emphasized that this defeat could have larger implications if the team does not improve this week against Buffalo. He criticized the team’s leaders for not setting the right example, accusing some players of making “business decisions” rather than displaying “football character.”

“There is a problem there. It’s gotta be a gut check in that locker room. The leaders on that team are not representing the Ravens of old. Watching the defense, there are players making business decisions, especially the so-called leaders. They need to dig deep and find some football character there in that locker room. Everybody wants to express themselves off the field instead of on it, and that’s a losing formula,” Martindale said. “If the Ravens don’t beat the Bills in Buffalo, there’s trouble brewing. I think there’s gonna be lineup changes and it could go deeper than that,” he added.

One major issue plaguing the Ravens this season is their inconsistency throughout games. The team frequently builds early leads only to falter after halftime, such as in the recent Bengals encounter. During that game, they struggled with receivers getting open, missed tackles, and offered little resistance to Joe Burrow. On average, they are allowing 23.9 points per game and faced a staggering 48-0 deficit in the second half of their last two matches.

The Ravens are now up against the 5-1 Buffalo Bills, who are coming off a bye. With Josh Allen at the helm, the Bills are ready to capitalize on any Ravens’ errors. This match signifies a potential pivotal moment for both defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and the Ravens. A loss would place them at 4-4 and further complicate their standing in a competitive AFC.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is slated to return after missing three games with a high ankle sprain. His dual-threat capabilities could enhance the offense’s ability to maintain drives and compete with the formidable Bills’ attack. However, Jackson’s return alone will not rectify defensive shortcomings. Sunday afternoon presents a critical opportunity for the Ravens’ defense to rebound and demonstrate their capability to limit one of the league’s top offenses.
