A dual U.S.-Salvadoran citizen, Michael Alejandro Castillo Murga, has been extradited to El Salvador to face charges related to the 2019 murder of a woman. This marks the first instance where the U.S. has surrendered an American citizen to El Salvador for prosecution, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Castillo Murga, 27, from Beaumont, California, is accused of killing Melvi Fernanda Nájera Quezada, 23, and abandoning their toddler son near her body. The murder is said to have occurred shortly after Castillo Murga picked them up from Nájera Quezada’s mother’s home on January 31, 2019, with the alleged intent of starting a family life together.
An autopsy revealed that Nájera Quezada died from severe bleeding caused by neck wounds and other injuries inflicted with a plastic knife, according to DOJ sources. Her body was discovered near a highway the following day. Investigators linked Castillo Murga to the crime using cellphone data and witness testimonies.
“This is a significant development in international justice,” a DOJ official commented.
Suspicion of Castillo Murga’s involvement was further fueled by a photograph he allegedly sent to a girlfriend, showing blood on his face and neck. Additionally, prosecutors accuse Castillo Murga’s grandmother and a lawyer of assisting in covering up evidence. They reportedly arranged for blood to be cleaned from his vehicle, though not all traces could be removed.
After the murder, Castillo Murga fled to Guatemala around February 2, 2019, before eventually entering the U.S., according to prosecutors. The extradition process involved the U.S. Marshals Service, which arrested him in October 2024. Castillo Murga contested his extradition legally, but a judge rejected his appeal in November 2025, clearing the way for his return to El Salvador in September 2026.
The secretary of state ultimately approved his extradition, and U.S. Marshals transferred Castillo Murga into Salvadoran custody for prosecution. This case highlights the complexities and international cooperation required in handling cross-border crimes.
