On a Saturday morning in Brooklyn, the atmosphere at FancyFree, a sports bar in Fort Greene, was lively. Arsenal flags swayed as chants of “Arsenal! Arsenal!” echoed throughout the neighborhood.
Before the noon kickoff, excitement filled the air. It wasn’t due to any event on the large screens showing the match, but because of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s entrance. He approached a side door, causing cheers to erupt.
Inside, fans welcomed him warmly. He navigated through the crowd in a blue-and-red Arsenal jersey over his formal wear. Filmmaker Spike Lee greeted him with a hug.
Regular attendees and the Mayor gathered, not only to support their beloved team but because the stakes were high. The game was the Champions League final. Arsenal had recently secured the Premier League title, and a Champions League victory would be unprecedented for the team.
Mayor Mamdani, whose focus usually shifts between governance issues, was fully present. “Arsenal! Arsenal!” filled the bar as the song “Human” by The Killers played. With a security team nearby, he was surrounded by friends—both those from his past and newer acquaintances like Lee.
