Josh Turek, a Paralympic gold medalist and state legislator, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Iowa, according to The Associated Press. Turek defeated Zach Wahls, a progressive rival, to secure the nomination in a contest that challenged the party’s anti-establishment tendencies.
Turek triumphed over Zach Wahls, a fellow state legislator who gained national attention in 2011 for his speech at the Iowa Capitol defending his lesbian parents. Wahls has been known for his strong advocacy and progressive stance.
Identifying as a “prairie populist,” Turek, 47, portrayed himself as a candidate capable of garnering support from independents and Republicans in a state where President Trump won thrice. At a debate last month, he stated, “I outperformed the top of the ticket by Trump by 50 percent, more than any other Democrat in the state. I know what it takes to win.”
Turek will compete against Representative Ashley Hinson, who represents the northwest corner of the state. The Senate Leadership Fund, the primary super PAC for Senate Republicans, has pledged at least $29 million to support her campaign, indicating that this year’s contest might be more competitive than previous elections.
Democrats are increasingly hopeful about their prospects in Iowa. Currently, Republicans hold the entire congressional delegation, governorship, and both chambers of the state legislature.
