Four Immigrant Workers Killed in Italy: The Dark Side of Labor Trafficking

In a tragic incident that underscores the brutality faced by foreign workers in Italy, four immigrant fruit pickers were killed in a horrific attack. The victims, who had been laboring in southern Italy’s agricultural fields, were targeted in what authorities have described as a criminal labor trafficking operation.

Surveillance video from Calabria captured the shocking event. Two individuals were seen pouring fuel on a van, where the workers were trapped, setting it ablaze, and blocking any chance of escape. One of the workers, however, managed to survive and has provided details of the attack.

Mohammad Taj Alamyar, a 35-year-old from Afghanistan, was among those subjected to this atrocity. He reported that along with him, the other victims were also from Afghanistan and Pakistan. They were employed in strawberry harvesting, yet they suffered from withheld wages. The attack was linked to their inquiries about the unpaid money they were owed.

According to Alamyar, those responsible for the attack were Pakistani drug traffickers, who have known connections with organized crime syndicates in Italy. He recounted his escape, despite injuries that left his hands bandaged and one arm in a sling. His testimony has been shared with Italian media, highlighting the dire situation faced by exploited workers.

Reacting to the news, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated, “Italy does not retreat in the face of violence and barbarity. It is essential to shed full light on this terrible crime and bring all those responsible to justice.” Her comments reflect the urgency with which Italian authorities are treating the incident, aiming to dismantle the criminal networks preying on foreign workers.
