Putin Addresses Air Defense and Ukraine Conflict at Economic Forum
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — President Vladimir Putin announced plans to bolster Russia’s air defense systems in response to recent Ukrainian drone strikes. These attacks have penetrated deep into Russia, overshadowing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
During a meeting with international news agencies, Putin expressed the need to enhance Russia’s air defense. “Some of them break through,” he lamented about the drone strikes. “We need to improve and strengthen our system, and we will do that.” The session occurred alongside the annual economic forum, a key event for investment promotion.
Just before the forum’s start, a Ukrainian drone attack hit an oil terminal and a naval base, igniting a fire and raising security concerns.
Zelenskyy’s Call for Talks
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine proposed direct negotiations with Putin through a public letter. He acknowledged the shift in U.S. focus towards Iran and stressed the urgency of negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump supported a potential meeting, stating it “would be great.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Putin had not reviewed the letter yet but maintained that Zelenskyy could visit Moscow for discussions. However, Putin suggested a meeting in a third country only when an agreement is ready to sign.
Putin criticized the notion of European Union mediation, citing a lack of neutrality required for effective mediation.
Military Strategy and Peace Efforts
Putin discussed the efficacy of Russia’s Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile. The missile was tested to ensure precision before deployment near residential areas. Putin emphasized Russia’s strategic aims, including controlling the entire Donetsk region. “Patriotism and will of the Russian people” were cited as driving forces behind these goals.
Putin expressed willingness to build on compromises reached during a summit with Trump in Alaska. He noted these could form the basis for agreements to end the conflict. He stressed the need for a comprehensive settlement over a temporary truce.
On Alleged Sabotage and International Relations
Addressing accusations of Russian sabotage across Europe, Putin questioned the evidence presented against Moscow. “What are the specific facts?” he asked, suggesting that Western aggression motivated such claims.
On the Iran conflict, Putin noted Russia’s ongoing offer to store enriched uranium, reflecting a past agreement.
Future Presidency
At age 73, Putin was queried about his future presidency plans. He playfully mentioned that “only God knows” the future, referencing constitutional amendments that allow him to extend his tenure.

Recent drone strikes, particularly on St. Petersburg’s Kronstadt naval base and oil terminal, emphasized the growing threat from Ukrainian forces.
