Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s SNAP Conditions

A federal judge in Boston ruled in favor of 20 Democratic states, blocking the Trump administration’s attempt to impose certain conditions on states for receiving funds from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The decision was made by U.S. District Judge Myong Joun, who granted a preliminary injunction against the administration’s requirements.

The lawsuit, challenging the funding conditions, claims these restrictions are tied to issues such as ‘gender ideology,’ ‘immigration,’ and ‘fair athletic opportunities’ for women and girls. Judge Joun announced that he would provide a memorandum later detailing his decision.

The states involved in the lawsuit argue that the Agriculture Department has implemented unconstitutional hurdles between the congressional programs and the states depending on them. This action, according to the states, jeopardizes essential nutrition assistance, agricultural research, and the safety of the national food supply and communities.

The government’s lawyers opposed the injunction, asserting that these new conditions would promote responsible management of taxpayer funds, bolster the USDA’s control and oversight of the allocated money, and ensure grant recipients adhere to federal laws and regulations.

SNAP, a significant component of the U.S. social safety net, assists around 39 million Americans, approximately 1 in 9 people, with grocery purchases. According to the Agriculture Department’s preliminary data, the number of beneficiaries decreased by nearly 4.3 million from January 2025 to January 2026. Experts attribute this decrease to the new requirements introduced by a substantial tax and spending cut bill, endorsed by Republicans last summer.
