Immigration Judges Face Increasing Caseloads Amid Deportation Efforts

Immigration judges are experiencing a significant increase in their workload as the current administration intensifies its efforts to expedite deportations. This situation has raised concerns among attorneys representing immigrants who fear that these changes might infringe upon due process rights.

As of June 6, 2026, reports indicate that immigration judges are conducting what are known as ‘mega immigration hearings.’ These sessions can involve judges reviewing over 100 cases each day. This approach has been recently implemented in several major cities across the nation.

In San Antonio, for instance, Immigration Judge Cynthia LaFuente-Gaona is accustomed to handling numerous cases daily. Her courtroom in Texas hosts individuals and families: men, women, and children, who plead their cases, seeking to remain in the United States.
