A 17-year-old teenager from Mississippi is accused of breaking into an elderly couple’s home and killing them before engaging authorities in a standoff. The suspect, Cordarius Hobbs, allegedly entered the Mendenhall home of 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, on June 3. This tragic incident raised alarm among local residents and law enforcement.
The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 12:24 p.m. when family members were unable to contact the couple. Upon arrival at the home, deputies were met with gunfire, according to the Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Bailey Martin. She mentioned a burglary was underway, with deputies and nearby civilians being trapped by the gunfire.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey revealed that Hobbs initially agreed to surrender at the front door but then attempted an escape through the house’s back, leading to a chase. During this incident, one deputy was injured.
Hobbs was apprehended after being shot by a Mississippi state trooper. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The charges against him are severe, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, and multiple counts of aggravated assault, both on civilians and law enforcement officers.
The couple’s family expressed their grief on Facebook, stating, “We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted.” The loss of Billy and Virginia Blair has left the community in shock. A friend, Jason Busby, described them as exceptionally kind people who would help anyone in need. “It’s just a tragedy,” Busby reflected on the impact of their sudden passing.
