President Trump announced that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has agreed to the terms of a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz and resume diplomatic talks about Iran’s nuclear program. This development emerged during a Thursday session at the Oval Office, where Trump confirmed the Supreme Leader’s approval in response to a reporter’s question.
Trump described the agreement as a “very strong” memorandum of understanding, adding that it carries a “conceptual” aspect. The signing ceremony is expected in Europe over the weekend, with Vice President Vance likely to represent the U.S. at the event. The president mentioned Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons.
Earlier the same day, Trump had threatened military action within Iran, including a possible U.S. takeover of Kharg Island. However, later in the day, he called off the strikes, citing encouraging progress in discussions with Iranian officials aimed at resolving the ongoing Middle East conflict.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, “Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved.” The Trump administration aims to secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz for oil and commercial ships while reopening nuclear talks.
Elsewhere, Trump criticized Sen. Mitch McConnell from the Oval Office, labeling him “an angry man.” He expressed hope for Republican support in Congress for funding related to the Iran situation.
