Federal Funding Halted for Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority

The Trump administration announced on Thursday the suspension of federal funding for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), citing issues with financial management. This decision comes after allegations of misallocated funds and failure to account for spending, leading to a significant backlash from local officials.

A letter from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) confirmed the immediate halt of funds to LAHSA. The agency has received almost $1 billion from the federal government over the past five years. Officials emphasized that under President Trump, HUD is committed to funding effective programs rather than failed initiatives. Scott Turner, the housing secretary, stated that taxpayers should not support an organization that prioritizes its interests over those it is meant to help.

Federal investigations and reports have indicated that LAHSA misused millions of dollars. As a result, Trump administration officials characterized Los Angeles as a focal point of the nation’s addiction-driven homelessness crisis. Despite receiving more federal homelessness aid than any other area, the issues persist.

Currently, LAHSA obtains $69 million, roughly 8% of its total budget, from federal sources for this fiscal year ending June 30. The agency traditionally relies more on funding from city and county governments within Los Angeles.
